New Year, New You

As every new year rolls around, I think we all try to make some kind of a New Year’s resolution or at least commit to trying to lose a few pounds! (I know I do!)

But there is one thing that I can think of, that will not only radically change your heart, but also your mind and even your life: Memorizing scripture.  

I accepted Christ in 1971 in Chapel Hill, NC, and the street preacher who had led me to Christ, Bob Eckhart, challenged me to memorize scripture from the very beginning. Bob told me that whenever I read a verse that made an impression on me, I should write it down on a  3-by-5 index card, write the reference on the back and then try to memorize it.

I had done a lot of formal memorization during my academic career. In high school I had to memorize lines for plays and while in college I would cram to memorize loads of information into my brain on the night before an exam, but I never dreamed I would ever be using this skill to memorize scripture! 

By the end of the summer of 1971, using this method, I had memorized over 600 verses of scripture, including the references!

I don’t say this to brag, but to point out the reason why, that after I had come to Christ, my life radically changed so quickly. I believe God had used the massive amounts of Scripture that I had memorized in my first 6 months as a follower of Jesus, to completely transform my life.

I refer to this as a case where the Scripture I memorized had “reprogrammed my mind”. Romans 12:2 says, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

That is exactly what memorizing the living, breathing Word of God will do in your life. Renew you and transform you!
